The mission statement of the Metropolitan Opera Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition is :
Beginning in 1954, the Metropolitan Opera in New York has organized an annual audition process through its National Council. In 2021, the competition name was changed in recognition of a generous gift from the Laffont family. The competition currently includes 11 regions and 36 districts.
The Nebraska District has been participating for over 50 years, and is currently part of the Upper Midwest Region; regional auditions are held in St. Paul, MN. We are also an "open" district, meaning that after the qualifying singers have registered, any participating singer who did not qualify may register for any available slots in the Nebraska District.
- To discover exceptional young talent and provide a venue for young opera singers across North America at all levels of development to be heard by representatives of the Metropolitan Opera and to assist those with the greatest potential for operatic careers.
